Gwalior is famous in the arena of music or Sangeet. It has been contributing in the realm of music since the age of Baiju Bawra. The most renowned classical singer (Dhrupadiya) was Baijnath Prasad alias Baiju Bawra, lived in Gwalior for his entire life under the patronage of Man Singh. Baiju was born in Chanderi, got his music lessons in Brindaban under great Swami Guru Haridas ji. He was the Court Musician of Gwalior along with Nayak Charju, Bakshu, and others.
Another famous singer,Tansen born in Behat was trained in music at Vrindavan. After the death of Tansen in Fatehpur Sikri and cremation in Agra,the ashes were buried in Gwalior. Tansen Samaroh is held every year in Gwalior is a musical extravaganza. Talented singers from across the country grace the festival and give their best performance.
Ustad Natthu Khan, Hassu Khan, Nissar Hussain, Rehmat Khan, Shankarrao Vishnu Pandit, Rajabhaiyya Poonchhwale, Krishnarao Pandit, all lived here and fed the soil of this land with the the magic of music. Even renowned artist like Mrs. Malini Rajurkar, a popular name in Hindustani music hails from Gwalior. Sarod Maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan also belongs to the city of Gwalior. His grandfather Ghulam Ali Khan Bangash was the court musician in Gwalior.
